Hawaii - The Big Island |
All of the Hawaii pictures were taken along the south and southeast coast of the Big Island in an area known as the Puna district , except for the picture of Rainbow Falls - which is located north of the Puna district on the east facing side of the Big Island near the town of Hilo. The black sand beach pictured in three photo's was formed by lava flowing into the ocean ,(from the volcano Kilauea), and then exploding into small particles back onto shore, thus creating sand. Pods of Spinner Dolphins are often sited not too far offshore from this beach. The picture showing a white , smoke - like column rising from the bottom of the photo is acually a steam plume created by lava flowing into the ocean. In the foreground of this picture is lava that has solidified into a dark coloured rock and has begun to support some small plant life - after many years. The picture of a sunset amidst what appears to be clouds is acually a double steam plume from the lava flow into the ocean , this picture was taken in the same location as the other photo showing a single steam plume. The picture of the road by the coast is a scenic route that runs several miles along the southeast portion of the Big Island. The east side of the Big Island receives high amounts of rainfall as opposed to the west side of the island , which is desert like in areas. |
